Known in Ghana by names including \u003cem\u003efugu\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003ebatakari\u003c\/em\u003e, the garment is traditionally constructed from narrow strips of handwoven fabric.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWedge-shaped godets are inserted below the chest to create the smock's distinctive flared silhouette. The design can be made using handwoven strips or regular fabric yardage cut or torn into strips and sewn together, making it an especially interesting project for weavers, textile artists and fabric lovers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe smock is designed for both women and men, with the women's version featuring elastic at the waist. It can be worn over trousers, shorts, pants or leggings, and the women's version can also be lengthened to create a dress.
