Unlike traditional corduroy with wide, pronounced ribs, this 21-wale fine corduroy features exceptionally narrow, closely spaced ribs that give the fabric a smoother, more delicate appearance.
Its soft, velvety texture adds subtle dimension to garments without the bold ribbing of heavier corduroy styles. The organic cotton blend provides comfort, while the small amount of spandex introduces just enough stretch for a little extra ease of movement.
At 270 gsm, this medium-weight fabric offers enough structure for trousers, skirts and lightweight jackets while remaining comfortable for everyday wear.
Our organic cotton stretch corduroy fabric is an excellent choice for a variety of apparel sewing projects, including:
With approximately 10% stretch, this corduroy is best suited to patterns designed for woven fabrics or garments that require only minimal stretch.
We recommend pre-washing your fabric using the same method you intend to use for your finished garment. Avoid pressing directly onto the ribbed surface, as excessive heat and pressure may flatten the delicate wales.
Corduroy has a directional pile, known as a nap, which affects how the fabric reflects light and how its colour appears.
When cutting your fabric, position all pattern pieces in the same direction to ensure a consistent colour and texture throughout your finished garment.
A universal needle is suitable for many projects, while a jeans needle may be helpful when sewing through multiple layers. Press gently from the wrong side to preserve the fine ribs.
The term "21 wale" refers to the number of raised ribs found within one inch of fabric. With 21 fine ribs per inch, this corduroy has a delicate, closely spaced texture that gives it a smoother and more refined appearance than traditional wide-wale corduroy.
The main difference is the size and spacing of the ribs. 8-wale corduroy features wider, more pronounced ribs, while 21-wale corduroy has much finer, closely spaced ribs. Our 21-wale corduroy is also lighter at 270 gsm compared with our 325 gsm 8-wale corduroy, making it a great choice for garments requiring a finer texture.
