This premium yarn-dyed cotton flannel combines the comfort of a brushed cotton flannel with the body needed for garments that benefit from a little more structure. Its warm brown plaid is woven with black, golden beige and fine violet accents, creating a rich colour palette that works especially well for autumn and winter wardrobes.
The fabric has a soft, cozy surface without feeling overly loose or flimsy. It holds its shape better than a lightweight shirting flannel, making it particularly well suited to garments such as overshirts, shirt jackets and structured button-up shirts where you want softness while still maintaining a defined silhouette.
What Makes Yarn-Dyed Flannel Different?
In a yarn-dyed fabric, the individual yarns are dyed before the fabric is woven. The plaid is therefore created by the construction of the fabric itself rather than being printed onto the surface.
This gives the pattern greater visual depth and allows the colours to remain visible on both sides of the fabric. The intersections between the differently coloured yarns also create subtle colour variations that give a woven plaid its characteristic richness.
For sewing projects where the inside of a garment may occasionally be visible—such as an unlined overshirt, rolled sleeve, shirt jacket or open-front layer—a yarn-dyed plaid can provide a particularly attractive finish.
How This Fabric Behaves
The brushed surface gives this cotton flannel its characteristic soft hand, while the woven construction provides enough stability to make it easy to handle during cutting and sewing. Unlike fluid fabrics that shift easily on the cutting table, a structured cotton flannel generally stays in place well and is approachable for sewists with different levels of experience.
The fabric has no stretch, so it is best paired with sewing patterns designed for woven fabrics. For fitted garments, choose a pattern that includes appropriate wearing ease rather than substituting it for a stretch fabric.
Because the surface is brushed, the fabric can appear slightly different depending on the direction in which the fibres are lying and how the light hits them. For the most consistent appearance on a finished garment, we recommend placing your pattern pieces in the same direction when cutting.
Sewing With Plaid
Plaid fabrics are especially beautiful when the horizontal and vertical lines are carefully aligned across prominent seams. When cutting a shirt, jacket or skirt, consider matching the plaid at areas such as the centre front, side seams, pockets and yokes.
Pattern matching usually requires more fabric than the minimum yardage indicated on a sewing pattern. The amount of additional fabric needed will depend on the size of the plaid repeat, garment size, number of pieces and how precisely you would like the lines to match.
For pieces where alignment is particularly important, cutting in a single layer can make it easier to position each pattern piece accurately on the plaid.

Sewing Tips
A universal sewing machine needle is suitable for most projects made with this cotton flannel. Choose the needle size according to the number of fabric layers you are sewing, particularly around collars, cuffs, pockets and other areas where several layers intersect.
A standard all-purpose polyester sewing thread is a practical choice for construction. Because the fabric is woven, finishing the raw edges with a serger, zigzag stitch or another seam finish will help keep the inside of the garment neat and reduce fraying over time.
For structured details such as collars, cuffs, button bands or pocket openings, interfacing can be added according to your sewing pattern. A lighter interfacing is generally preferable when you want to preserve the softness of the flannel rather than making these areas unnecessarily rigid.
Prewashing & Care
We strongly recommend prewashing cotton fabric before cutting. Natural cotton fibres can change slightly after their first wash, and prewashing allows this to happen before the garment is sewn.
Wash the fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. After washing, gently straighten the fabric before drying if necessary and press it before laying out your pattern pieces.
Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side.
We recommend pre-washing your fabric the same way you plan to wash your finished garment.

We strive for excellence in our products and customer service, but some imperfections may occur with fabric.
Please note that stains, holes, or blemishes within 3 inches (10 cm) of the edge are considered acceptable. Missing or pulled knit stitches on the wrong side of the fabric that do not distort the face are also considered acceptable. Additionally, fabric cut at 1 to 3 cm from the edge is acceptable. Stains on the inside of the fabric are also acceptable if they do not appear on the right side.
Please be aware that fabric may shrink after the first wash, so we recommend purchasing slightly more than the exact length required for your project.
We cannot cancel or refund orders once we've cut your fabric. If a refund is necessary, a 5% administration fee of your total bill will be charged.
We cannot offer refunds or compensation for items purchased a few days before they go on sale.
If a product is sold out, we'll contact you immediately to offer either a refund of the item at the price you've paid or a replacement with a product of equal value.
