Made from 98% organic cotton and 2% spandex, this woven fabric combines the distinctive ribbed texture of classic corduroy with a touch of stretch for added comfort.
With its soft, velvety surface and substantial 325 gsm weight, this corduroy offers the body and structure needed for pants, jackets, skirts, overalls and dresses. Its pronounced ribs add depth and visual interest, making it a timeless choice for handmade wardrobes.
What Is 8-Wale Corduroy?
The term 8 wale refers to the number of raised vertical ribs, or cords, found in one inch of corduroy fabric. An 8-wale corduroy has approximately eight ribs per inch, giving it a beautifully defined texture.
The lower the wale number, the wider the ribs. Fine-wale corduroy has narrower, more closely spaced ribs, while wide-wale corduroy features broader, more pronounced ridges.
Our 8-wale organic cotton corduroy features a distinctive, moderately wide rib that adds texture and dimension to garments. Combined with its substantial weight and slight stretch, it is an excellent choice for comfortable, structured sewing projects.
Why Choose Organic Cotton Stretch Corduroy?
Organic cotton corduroy brings together classic style, comfortable natural fibres and a beautifully textured finish. The addition of 2% spandex provides a touch of flexibility, making this fabric especially appealing for everyday garments that benefit from both structure and ease of movement.
- Timeless texture: Distinctive raised ribs give garments a rich, classic corduroy appearance.
- Comfortable cotton blend: Made predominantly from organic cotton, with a touch of spandex for flexibility.
- Substantial weight: At 325 gsm, this fabric is well suited to garments requiring body and structure.
- Versatile for sewing: Suitable for a wide range of casual clothing, wardrobe staples and accessories.
- Classic style: A beautiful choice for garments that can be worn and enjoyed season after season.

Tips for Sewing Corduroy Fabric
Corduroy is a rewarding fabric to sew, and a few simple techniques will help you achieve beautiful results.
- Pay attention to the nap: Corduroy has a directional surface. Cut all pattern pieces in the same direction to maintain a consistent appearance.
- Choose an appropriate needle: A universal or jeans needle in size 90/14 is a useful starting point for this substantial fabric.
- Consider seam bulk: Grade or trim bulky seam allowances where appropriate, particularly around waistbands, pockets and collars.
- Handle the fabric gently: Avoid excessive pressure when pressing to preserve the raised corduroy ribs.
- Pre-wash before cutting: Pre-wash the fabric using the same care method you intend to use for your finished garment.
Care Instructions
- Machine wash in cold water.
- Do not bleach.
- Dry flat.
- Iron on a low heat setting from the wrong side when necessary.
- Use a pressing cloth and avoid applying excessive pressure to the raised ribs.
Pre-washing is recommended before cutting and sewing to allow for any natural shrinkage.
