This premium lavender plaid cotton flannel fabric offers a fresh and distinctive interpretation of classic tartan. A soft lavender ground is crossed with rich red, forest green and dark navy lines, while fine golden-yellow accents add contrast and definition throughout the plaid.
Made from 100% cotton, this yarn-dyed flannel has a softly brushed surface and a substantial 260 gsm weight. It combines the cozy hand associated with traditional flannel with enough body to create garments that hold their shape beautifully.
The unusual lavender colourway gives this traditional plaid a more contemporary character. It works especially well for statement overshirts, shirt jackets and button-up shirts, but its moderate structure also makes it a beautiful option for skirts, pinafores, casual dresses and other cool-weather garments.
A Lavender Take on Classic Tartan
The standout feature of this fabric is its soft lavender ground. Instead of the darker base traditionally associated with tartan-inspired plaids, lavender gives the fabric a lighter and more unexpected appearance while still pairing beautifully with classic red and green.
Forest green and dark navy create depth within the plaid, while vivid red introduces stronger contrast. Fine golden-yellow lines run through the design and help define the individual sections of the pattern.
The combination creates a plaid that feels both familiar and distinctive, making it an excellent choice for garments where the fabric itself is intended to become a major part of the design.
What Is Yarn-Dyed Flannel?
In a yarn-dyed fabric, the individual yarns are coloured before they are woven together. The plaid is therefore created as part of the fabric's woven construction rather than being printed onto the finished surface.
This process gives the pattern greater visual depth and allows the plaid to remain visible on both sides of the cloth. Where differently coloured yarns intersect, they can also create additional shades and subtle colour variations that contribute to the dimensional appearance of the fabric.
The woven design is especially attractive for garments where the reverse may occasionally be visible, including rolled cuffs, open overshirts, unlined shirt jackets and other layering pieces.
Soft Brushed Cotton With Structure
The brushed cotton surface gives this flannel its characteristic softness and comfortable hand. At the same time, its 260 gsm weight provides enough substance for garments that benefit from moderate structure and definition.
It holds details such as collars, cuffs, button plackets and patch pockets well without having the weight or bulk of a true coating fabric. This makes it particularly versatile for transitional and cold-weather garments.
Rather than producing the flowing silhouette of rayon or viscose, this cotton flannel creates a cleaner and more structured shape. Choose sewing patterns intended for medium-weight woven fabrics for the best results.
Perfect for Overshirts & Shirt Jackets
At 260 gsm, this fabric is particularly well suited to overshirts, shackets and shirt jackets. It provides enough body for structured details while maintaining the softness and comfort expected from cotton flannel.
For a traditional button-up shirt, it will create a warmer and more substantial garment than lightweight shirting. It can also be used for skirts, pinafores and dresses when the pattern is designed for a fabric with some body rather than a fluid drape.
Working With Plaid Fabric
Careful pattern placement can make a significant difference when sewing with plaid. Aligning the major horizontal and vertical lines across prominent seams creates a cleaner and more professional-looking finished garment.
Pay particular attention to the centre front, side seams, patch pockets, yokes and sleeve placement. For button-front garments, planning the position of the plaid along the centre front before cutting can help create a balanced and symmetrical appearance.
For pieces where matching is particularly important, consider cutting the fabric in a single layer. This makes it easier to see exactly where each section of the plaid will fall and to position mirrored pattern pieces accurately.
Use the Plaid as a Design Feature
The contrasting colours and clearly defined lines of this plaid also give you opportunities to use the pattern creatively. Smaller garment details such as patch pockets, cuffs, yokes and selected collar pieces can be positioned differently to create intentional contrast.
Depending on your sewing pattern, certain pieces can also be cut on the bias to turn the plaid diagonally. This can create an attractive design feature while reducing the need to perfectly match the plaid on those particular pieces.
Allow Extra Fabric for Plaid Matching
When your sewing pattern gives fabric requirements based on a plain fabric, consider purchasing additional fabric for plaid matching. Matching the horizontal and vertical lines often requires pattern pieces to be moved farther apart than they would be on a solid fabric.
The amount of additional fabric required will depend on the plaid repeat, garment size, number of pattern pieces and how precisely you would like the pattern to align.
Cutting Brushed Flannel
Because brushed fabrics have a slightly raised surface, their appearance can change subtly depending on the direction of the fibres and the way light reflects from them.
For the most consistent finished appearance, we recommend cutting all main garment pieces in the same direction. Before cutting, check that the plaid is positioned correctly in relation to the grainline and take time to align your pattern pieces carefully.

Sewing Tips
A universal sewing machine needle is suitable for most projects made with this cotton flannel. Choose your needle size according to the number of fabric layers being sewn, particularly around collars, cuffs, pockets and button bands.
Standard all-purpose polyester thread works well for garment construction. Since this is a woven fabric, finishing the raw edges with a serger, zigzag stitch or your preferred seam finish will help reduce fraying and keep the inside of the garment neat.
Interfacing can be added to collars, cuffs, button plackets and other structured areas according to your sewing pattern. A lighter interfacing is generally preferable when you want to preserve the soft character of the flannel.
Prewashing & Care
We recommend prewashing cotton flannel before cutting. Natural cotton fibres may change after their first wash, so prewashing allows this to happen before your garment is cut and sewn.
Wash the fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. After washing and drying, press the fabric before laying out your pattern pieces so the plaid and grain can be positioned accurately.
Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side.
We recommend pre-washing your fabric the same way you plan to wash your finished garment.
Due to colour variations between monitors and mobile devices, we cannot guarantee that the colour displayed on your screen will exactly match the fabric in person.
