PDF SEWING PATTERN | Melanie Dress | Hey Hey Dorothy Kay
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Sizes: US 0–30
Style: Sleeveless Dress with Princess Seams and Godets
Language: English
Meet the Melanie Dress by Hey Hey Dorothy Kay, an elegant sewing pattern that combines a beautifully shaped bodice with a dramatic, flowing skirt.
Designed with a softly curved racerback neckline, flattering princess seams and four generous godet panels, Melanie creates a distinctive silhouette that is fitted through the upper body and expands gracefully toward the hem.
The princess seams provide shaping through the bust and torso, while the godets add volume and movement to the skirt. As you walk, the inserted panels open naturally, creating a flowing silhouette without requiring gathers or a traditional circle-skirt construction.
The result is a versatile handmade dress that feels equally appropriate for a summer wedding, a special dinner, a garden party or an evening out.
Melanie features an invisible zipper in the side seam for a discreet closure that maintains the clean lines of the dress. Its sleeveless design and carefully shaped bodice offer a timeless look that can be transformed through fabric choice.

Design Details
Flattering Princess Seams
The Melanie Dress features shaped princess seams running through the front and back bodice and continuing down into the skirt panels.
These seams follow the natural contours of the body, providing a more tailored appearance through the bust and torso while creating elegant vertical lines.
The designer includes instructions for adjusting the midsection fit, allowing you to create a closer silhouette or retain a little additional ease for comfort.
Four Dramatic Godet Panels
The defining feature of Melanie is its four godets, inserted into the princess-seam openings below the fitted upper portion of the dress.
Two godets are positioned at the front and two at the back, creating additional volume and a graceful shape through the lower skirt.
These triangular fabric inserts widen toward the hem, allowing the skirt to move naturally as you walk or turn.
Racerback-Inspired Neckline
The softly shaped racerback bodice creates a clean, modern silhouette with a graceful neckline and narrower shoulder coverage.
Its sleeveless construction makes Melanie particularly suitable for warm-weather fabrics and occasionwear.
Invisible Side Zipper
An invisible zipper is installed along one side of the dress, creating a discreet closure without interrupting the princess seams or the flowing skirt design.
The zipper can be installed on either side according to your preference.
Customizable Midsection Fit
Although Melanie has a fitted appearance, the designer intentionally includes some ease through the midsection so the dress can be adjusted during construction.
You can take in the shaping seams for a closer fit or maintain a slightly more relaxed silhouette.
Elegant Flowing Skirt
The combination of fitted panels and flared godets produces beautiful movement through the skirt.
For the intended effect, select a fabric with sufficient softness and drape. Very stiff fabrics may produce a more structured silhouette.
Recommended Fabrics
The Melanie Dress is designed for lightweight to medium-weight woven fabrics with good drape.
The designer recommends linen, cotton lawn, rayon challis and similar blends.
Fabric Tip: Avoid fabrics that are excessively stiff or structured. The godet panels need a fabric that drapes well to achieve the intended effect.
Sewing Tip: Stable, easy-to-handle woven fabrics are particularly helpful when sewing curved princess seams and accurately inserting the godet panels.
Fabric Requirements
The following quantities are based on the designer's fabric requirements chart, using fabric approximately 137 cm / 54" wide.
US Sizes 0–4

US Sizes 6–10
- Fabric: 3 yards (approximately 2.74 m)

Important: The quantities above are the designer's estimates for 54" wide fabric. Actual requirements can vary depending on fabric width, cutting layout, shrinkage, pattern matching and personal adjustments.
Allow extra fabric if your chosen material is narrower than 137 cm or if you plan to lengthen the dress.

Sizing & Fit
The Melanie Dress includes US sizes 0–30, with 16 sizes in increments of two.
The pattern is drafted for an approximate height of 165–170 cm / 5'5"–5'7" and a C-cup bust.
The designer recommends using your bust, waist and hip measurements to choose a size. If you fall between sizes, you can blend between sizes or consider sizing down, according to the designer's fit guidance.
Important Fit Note: The fitted bodice makes a test garment particularly useful. Check the finished garment measurements and try the bodice on before making final adjustments.
