This premium navy tartan plaid cotton flannel fabric combines the timeless character of a traditional tartan-inspired plaid with the softness and comfort of brushed cotton. A deep navy ground is crossed with rich red and forest green bands, fine golden yellow lines and subtle blue accents, creating a beautifully layered plaid with plenty of visual depth.

At 260 gsm, this flannel has enough body to create a defined silhouette while remaining soft and comfortable to wear. It sits beautifully between traditional shirting and lightweight outerwear, making it an excellent choice for cozy button-up shirts, oversized overshirts, shirt jackets, structured skirts and dresses, and casual layering pieces for cooler weather.

Classic Tartan-Inspired Plaid

The combination of navy, red, green and golden yellow gives this fabric the distinctive character associated with classic tartan plaids. The predominantly navy background keeps the overall look rich and versatile, while the brighter intersecting stripes add contrast and definition.

This colour combination works particularly well for autumn and winter garments and pairs beautifully with denim, corduroy, neutral basics and other seasonal wardrobe staples.

What Is Yarn-Dyed Flannel?

Unlike a printed plaid, this yarn-dyed flannel is created using individually coloured yarns that are woven together to form the plaid pattern. The design is therefore part of the construction of the fabric rather than a print applied only to its surface.

This technique creates greater visual depth and allows the plaid to remain visible on both sides of the cloth. Where different coloured yarns intersect, additional subtle shades are created naturally within the weave, contributing to the rich, multidimensional appearance of the fabric.

Because the pattern is woven through the fabric, yarn-dyed flannel is especially attractive for garments where the reverse may occasionally be visible, including rolled cuffs, open overshirts and casual unlined jackets.

Soft Brushed Cotton With Structure

The cotton surface is brushed to create the familiar soft, slightly fuzzy texture associated with quality flannel. Brushing raises fine fibres from the surface of the woven cloth, giving the fabric a warmer and softer hand without sacrificing the stability of the underlying weave.

The result is a fabric that combines softness, warmth and moderate structure. It feels comfortable against the skin while retaining enough body for collars, cuffs, button plackets, patch pockets and other garment details that benefit from definition.

Unlike fluid fabrics such as viscose or rayon, this flannel holds its shape and creates a more defined silhouette. It is therefore best suited to sewing patterns designed for medium-weight woven fabrics.

Perfect for Overshirts & Shirt Jackets

This weight of cotton flannel is particularly well suited to overshirts, shackets and shirt jackets. It has enough substance to give collars, pockets and button fronts a defined appearance while remaining comfortable enough for everyday layering.

It can also be used for more substantial button-up shirts when you want something warmer than traditional shirting. For skirts and dresses, choose patterns that benefit from moderate structure rather than designs that require a very fluid drape.

Working With Plaid Fabric

Careful pattern placement can make a significant difference when sewing with plaid. Aligning the prominent horizontal and vertical lines across seams gives the finished garment a cleaner and more professional appearance.

Pay particular attention to the centre front, side seams, patch pockets, yokes and sleeve placement. On button-front garments, planning where the plaid falls along the centre front before cutting can help create a balanced and intentional result.

Patch pockets are especially noticeable on plaid garments. They can be carefully matched to the fabric underneath for a nearly invisible effect or intentionally positioned differently to create a contrasting design feature.

Try Bias-Cut Plaid Details

One of the advantages of working with plaid is the opportunity to use the pattern itself as a design element. Smaller pieces such as pockets, yokes, cuffs or collar details can sometimes be cut on the bias, turning the straight plaid into diagonal lines.

This technique creates visual contrast without introducing another fabric and works particularly well with the strong red, green and gold lines in this tartan-inspired design. Always follow your sewing pattern's grainline instructions for structural pieces that should not be cut on the bias.

Allow Extra Fabric for Plaid Matching

When your sewing pattern specifies fabric requirements for a plain fabric, consider purchasing additional yardage for plaid matching. Pattern pieces often need to be repositioned in order to align the horizontal and vertical lines, which means they cannot always be nested as closely together as they would be on a solid fabric.

The exact amount of additional fabric required depends on the plaid repeat, garment size, number of pattern pieces and how precisely you would like the design to match.

Garments with button fronts, patch pockets, multiple panels, yokes and large collars generally require more careful placement and may benefit from additional fabric.

Cutting Brushed Flannel

Because flannel has a brushed surface, its appearance can change subtly depending on the direction in which the fibres lie and how they reflect light. For the most consistent appearance, we recommend cutting your main garment pieces in the same direction.

For greater control when matching the plaid, you may also prefer to cut your pattern pieces in a single layer. This makes it easier to see exactly where the red, green, blue and golden lines will fall on each piece and helps maintain symmetry between mirrored pieces.

Sewing Tips

A universal sewing machine needle is suitable for most projects made with this cotton flannel. Choose the needle size according to the number of fabric layers you are sewing, particularly around collars, cuffs, pockets and button bands.

Standard all-purpose polyester thread works well for garment construction. As with most woven fabrics, the raw edges can fray, so finishing your seam allowances with a serger, zigzag stitch or your preferred seam finish will help keep the inside of the garment neat.

Interfacing may be added to collars, cuffs, button bands and other structured areas according to your sewing pattern. To preserve the soft character of the flannel, avoid choosing an interfacing that is unnecessarily stiff.

Prewashing & Care

We recommend prewashing cotton flannel before cutting. Natural cotton fibres can change after their first wash, so prewashing allows this to happen before you invest time in cutting and sewing your garment.

Wash the fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. After washing and drying, press the fabric before laying out your pattern pieces so the plaid and grain can be positioned accurately.

Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side.

We recommend pre-washing your fabric the same way you plan to wash your finished garment.

Due to the different color variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the color will exactly match what you see online.
