This premium orange, red and navy plaid cotton flannel fabric combines the cozy softness associated with classic flannel with enough body for beautifully structured garments. Its rich plaid blends warm red and rust tones with deep navy, while the overlapping yarns create subtle burgundy variations that give the fabric additional depth.

The result is a classic cold-weather plaid that feels timeless without looking overly traditional. The warm red tones provide the dominant colour while the dark navy sections create contrast and visual balance, making this fabric particularly well suited to fall and winter wardrobe pieces.

What Is Yarn-Dyed Flannel?

Unlike a printed plaid, this fabric is yarn-dyed. The individual cotton yarns are dyed before the fabric is woven, and the plaid is created by weaving differently coloured yarns across one another.

This means the pattern is an integral part of the fabric rather than a design applied only to its surface. The intersections between the red and navy yarns create additional tones naturally within the weave, contributing to the rich, dimensional appearance of the plaid.

Yarn-dyed construction also means the plaid remains visible on both sides of the fabric. This is especially attractive for garments where the reverse may occasionally show, including rolled cuffs, open overshirts and unlined casual jackets.

Soft Brushed Cotton Surface

Flannel gets its characteristic soft feel from a finishing process that raises fine fibres from the surface of the woven cotton. This creates the slightly fuzzy, comfortable hand associated with brushed flannel.

The brushing adds softness without removing the stability of the woven base underneath. As a result, this fabric offers a useful combination of softness, warmth and structure for garment sewing.

It will hold a more defined silhouette than fluid fabrics such as viscose or rayon, making it particularly suitable for sewing patterns designed for medium-weight woven fabrics.

Ideal for Overshirts & Shirt Jackets

This type of cotton flannel is especially well suited to overshirts and shirt jackets. It has enough body to give collars, pockets and button fronts definition while remaining comfortable enough to wear as a layering piece.

It can also work beautifully for structured button-up shirts when you want a more substantial result than traditional shirting. For skirts and dresses, choose patterns that benefit from some body rather than designs requiring a very fluid drape.

The fabric can be worn as an indoor garment or incorporated into transitional layering pieces for cooler weather, depending on the pattern and construction you choose.

Working With Plaid Fabric

Plaid rewards careful cutting. When the dominant horizontal and vertical lines are aligned across seams, the finished garment can look considerably more polished and intentional.

Before cutting, identify the most prominent lines in the plaid and use them as reference points when positioning your pattern pieces. Pay particular attention to the centre front, side seams, sleeves, yokes and patch pockets.

For button-front garments, planning the placement of the plaid along the centre front before cutting can help create a balanced result. If the garment has two patch pockets, positioning both pockets at equivalent points in the plaid will also create visual symmetry.

Try Bias-Cut Details

Plaid also gives you the opportunity to use the pattern itself as a design detail. Pieces such as pockets, yokes, cuffs or collar components can sometimes be cut on the bias so that the plaid runs diagonally rather than horizontally and vertically.

This creates contrast without introducing another fabric and can be particularly effective on overshirts and casual jackets. Always follow the grainline requirements of your sewing pattern for structural pieces where bias cutting would not be appropriate.

Tips for Accurate Plaid Matching

For greater control over pattern placement, consider cutting your pattern pieces in a single layer. This allows you to see exactly where each section of the plaid will fall and makes it easier to create matching left and right pieces.

You can also mark a recognizable horizontal line of the plaid directly on your paper pattern and use that reference when positioning neighbouring pieces. This is particularly useful for matching side seams and sleeves.

When matching every seam is not practical, prioritize the areas that are most visible on the finished garment. Centre fronts, prominent pockets and major horizontal seams usually have the greatest visual impact.

Allow Extra Fabric for Pattern Matching

When sewing with plaid, we recommend considering additional fabric beyond the yardage listed for a solid fabric.

Pattern pieces often need to be shifted along the fabric so that specific lines of the plaid align with one another. This prevents pieces from being nested as tightly as they normally would be and can increase fabric consumption.

The amount of additional fabric needed depends on the plaid repeat, garment size, pattern layout and number of seams you intend to match. Projects with button fronts, patch pockets, yokes and multiple panels generally require more careful placement.

Keep the Fabric Direction Consistent

Because flannel has a brushed surface, light can interact differently with the raised fibres depending on their direction. We recommend cutting your main garment pieces in the same direction for the most consistent finished appearance.

Before cutting, run your hand over the fabric in both directions and look at it from different angles. Once you choose the direction you prefer, keep the top of your major pattern pieces oriented consistently.

Sewing Tips

A universal sewing machine needle is suitable for most projects made with this cotton flannel. Choose an appropriate needle size for the number of layers being sewn, particularly around collars, cuffs, pockets and button plackets.

Standard all-purpose polyester thread is suitable for general garment construction. As with other woven cotton fabrics, the raw edges should be finished with a serger, zigzag stitch or another appropriate seam finish to help control fraying.

If your pattern requires interfacing for collars, cuffs or button bands, take the existing structure of the flannel into account. A lighter interfacing may provide sufficient support without making these areas unnecessarily stiff.

Prewashing & Care

We recommend prewashing cotton flannel before cutting. Prewashing allows the cotton to settle before the garment is constructed and also gives you the opportunity to see how the brushed surface behaves after laundering.

Wash the fabric using the same method you plan to use for your finished garment. After washing and drying, press the fabric before laying out your pattern pieces so that the grain and plaid can be positioned accurately.

Machine wash cold.
Tumble dry low or hang to dry.
Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side.

We recommend pre-washing your fabric the same way you plan to wash your finished garment.
