Design Details
Two Decorative Horse Motifs:
The central design features two stylized rearing horses facing each other. Their flowing manes, curved tails and expressive silhouettes create a sense of movement against the geometric patchwork background.
Star Appliqué Details:
Decorative stars add contrast and visual interest to the horses. These appliqués are positioned using double-sided fusible web and secured according to the illustrated sewing instructions.
Geometric Checkerboard Background:
The quilt background is constructed from twelve fabric squares arranged in alternating colours. This simple yet effective patchwork design creates a structured backdrop for the detailed horse motifs.
Quilted Construction:

Recommended Fabrics
Juliana Martejevs recommends stable woven fabrics without stretch, particularly cotton poplin. Select fabrics with similar weights and structures to ensure that the patchwork lies flat and the appliqués retain their shape.
Designer Fabric Recommendation: Cotton poplin in various colours, with a similar weight for all selected fabrics.
Fabric Selection Tip: Choose contrasting colours for the two horse silhouettes and coordinate the star appliqués with the background. Deep navy, forest green, warm ochre and rust create a sophisticated autumn-inspired palette, while pastels can create a softer decorative effect.
Important: This pattern is designed for non-stretch woven fabrics. Stretch jersey, elastic knits and highly textured fabrics are not recommended for following the original construction.

Sewing Tip: A walking foot can help keep the fabric layers aligned during quilting. The designer also recommends using blanket stitch or zigzag stitch to finish the appliqué edges.
Important: Batting and double-sided fusible web serve different purposes. Batting provides padding and structure, while fusible web secures the horse and star appliqués in position before sewing.

Pattern Construction Overview
Step 1 – Create the Patchwork Background:
Cut six 27 × 27 cm squares from Fabric A and six from Fabric B. Arrange the squares into three alternating rows and join them together to create the background.
Step 2 – Prepare the Backing:
Cut a 102 × 77 cm rectangle from Fabric A and a matching piece of batting. Fuse the batting to the wrong side of the backing fabric, then secure the patchwork front and backing together with quilting stitches.
Step 3 – Prepare the Horse Appliqués:
Apply double-sided fusible web to Fabrics C, D, E and F. Cut the horse silhouettes, stars, eyes and irises using the supplied pattern pieces.
Step 4 – Attach the Decorative Motifs:
Arrange the horse appliqués on the quilt according to the pattern markings. Fuse them in place, add the decorative stars and secure the edges using blanket stitch or zigzag stitch. Follow the illustrated instructions for the final eye and iris details.
Step 5 – Finish with Bias Binding:
Attach bias tape around the entire quilt, carefully folding each corner for a neat and durable finish.
Step 6 – Add Optional Hanging Loops:
For wall display, sew fabric loops along the upper edge and use a wooden dowel to hang your finished quilt.

Because digital products cannot be returned once downloaded, we do not offer refunds, returns, or exchanges on any PDF pattern purchases.

We strive for excellence in our products and customer service, but some imperfections may occur with fabric.
Please note that stains, holes, or blemishes within 3 inches (10 cm) of the edge are considered acceptable. Missing or pulled knit stitches on the wrong side of the fabric that do not distort the face are also considered acceptable. Additionally, fabric cut at 1 to 3 cm from the edge is acceptable. Stains on the inside of the fabric are also acceptable if they do not appear on the right side.
Please be aware that fabric may shrink after the first wash, so we recommend purchasing slightly more than the exact length required for your project.
We cannot cancel or refund orders once we've cut your fabric. If a refund is necessary, a 5% administration fee of your total bill will be charged.
We cannot offer refunds or compensation for items purchased a few days before they go on sale.
If a product is sold out, we'll contact you immediately to offer either a refund of the item at the price you've paid or a replacement with a product of equal value.
