This premium cotton flannel fabric combines the familiar softness of brushed flannel with a more substantial, structured hand, making it especially well suited to garment sewing. Each colourway features a classic yarn-dyed plaid with rich intersecting colours that create depth and character throughout the cloth.

Soft against the skin but with enough body to hold a defined silhouette, this flannel is a beautiful choice for garments that sit between traditional shirting and lightweight outerwear. Think cozy button-up shirts, oversized overshirts, shirt jackets, structured dresses and skirts, or casual layering pieces for cooler weather.

What Is Yarn-Dyed Flannel?

Unlike a printed plaid, where colour is applied to the surface of an already woven fabric, a yarn-dyed plaid is created by weaving together yarns that have been dyed before weaving. The horizontal and vertical coloured yarns intersect to form the finished plaid pattern.

This construction gives the fabric a richer, more dimensional appearance and means that the plaid is visible on both sides of the cloth. This is particularly attractive for garments where the reverse may occasionally show, such as rolled cuffs, open overshirts and unlined jackets.

The woven construction also gives classic plaids their characteristic colour variations: where two differently coloured yarns cross, they can visually create an additional tone. This is part of what gives a well-made yarn-dyed plaid more depth than a flat printed imitation.

Softness With Structure

The surface has been brushed to create the soft, slightly fuzzy hand associated with flannel. Brushing raises some of the cotton fibres from the surface of the cloth, giving it a warmer and softer feel while preserving the stability of the woven base underneath.

This makes the fabric comfortable for garments worn close to the body while still providing enough structure for collars, cuffs, pockets, button plackets and other tailored details.

It is less fluid than fabrics such as viscose or lightweight cotton lawn. Instead, expect a fabric that holds its shape and creates a more defined silhouette, making it particularly appealing for relaxed shirts, overshirts and utility-inspired garments.

Choosing Your Plaid

Four distinctive colourways make it possible to achieve very different looks from the same fabric quality:

  • Forest: A warm multicoloured plaid with an outdoorsy, heritage-inspired character.
  • Blackberry: A darker plaid built around deep, muted tones for a sophisticated cool-weather look.
  • Evergreen: A classic green-based plaid accented with contrasting red tones.
  • Classic Red: A traditional red-based tartan-inspired plaid for a timeless statement.

Because the colours are woven rather than printed, each option retains the distinctive texture and visual depth of a true yarn-dyed plaid.

Working With Plaid Fabric

When sewing a plaid garment, the placement of the pattern can have a significant effect on the finished result. Matching prominent horizontal and vertical lines across seams creates a polished, professional appearance.

Pay particular attention to the centre front, side seams, pockets, yokes and sleeve placement. Patch pockets are especially noticeable on plaid garments, so taking the time to align them with the fabric underneath can make a considerable difference to the finished piece.

For greater control, plaid pattern pieces can be cut in a single layer rather than with the fabric folded. After cutting the first piece, it can be used as a guide when positioning a mirrored piece so that the plaid placement remains symmetrical.

You can also intentionally change the direction of the plaid for design details. Cutting a pocket, yoke, cuff or other accent piece on the bias creates diagonal lines and can add visual interest without introducing another fabric.

Allow Extra Fabric for Plaid Matching

When your sewing pattern specifies fabric requirements for a plain fabric, consider purchasing additional yardage for plaid matching. Matching the design can prevent pattern pieces from being nested as closely together as they normally would be.

The exact amount required depends on the plaid repeat, garment size, number of pattern pieces and how carefully you intend to match the design. Projects with large patch pockets, multiple panels or a button front may require more careful placement than a simple skirt or loose-fitting garment.

Cutting Brushed Flannel

Because flannel has a brushed surface, its appearance can change subtly depending on the direction in which the fibres lie and how they reflect light. For a consistent appearance across your finished garment, we recommend cutting your main pattern pieces in the same direction.

Before cutting, check that the plaid runs straight across the fabric. Taking a little extra time during layout is particularly worthwhile with plaid, since even small differences in placement can become more visible after the garment is assembled.

Sewing Tips

A universal sewing machine needle is suitable for most projects using this cotton flannel. Adjust the needle size when sewing through several layers, particularly around collars, cuffs, pocket corners and button bands.

Standard all-purpose polyester thread works well for garment construction. As with most woven fabrics, the cut edges can fray, so finishing your seam allowances with a serger, zigzag stitch or your preferred seam finish will help keep the inside of the garment neat.

Interfacing may be used for collars, cuffs, button bands and other structured areas according to your sewing pattern. If you want to retain the soft character of the flannel, avoid choosing an interfacing that is unnecessarily stiff for the project.

Prewashing & Care

We recommend prewashing cotton flannel before cutting. Cotton can change after its first wash, and prewashing allows this to happen before you invest time in cutting and sewing your garment.

Wash the fabric using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment. After washing and drying, press the fabric before laying out your pattern so the plaid and grain can be positioned accurately.

Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Iron at medium heat, preferably on the reverse side.

Due to the different color variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the color will exactly match what you see online.

We strive for excellence in our products and customer service, but some imperfections may occur with fabric.

Please note that stains, holes, or blemishes within 3 inches (10 cm) of the edge are considered acceptable.
