The ruching is created by stitching narrow elastic directly to the garment's seam allowances, allowing the fabric to gather naturally. Unlike adjustable drawstring designs, the gathering is permanently incorporated into the garment construction, creating a consistent ruched effect.
Choose between a softly gathered peplum hem for added volume and movement or a clean, fitted hem for a streamlined look. Both options can be sewn with short or long sleeves, giving you four versatile combinations.
A shaped seam across the upper bust adds a distinctive design element, while a fitted neckband gives the neckline a comfortable, polished finish.

Design Variations
Short Sleeves – Without Peplum
Create a fitted short-sleeve top with a clean lower hem. The gathered centre front and sides add visual interest while maintaining a streamlined silhouette.
Short Sleeves – With Peplum
Combine the short sleeves with a softly gathered peplum for a playful, feminine design. The peplum adds volume and movement below the fitted bodice.
Long Sleeves – Without Peplum
Choose long sleeves and a fitted hem for a versatile, body-skimming top that can be worn with jeans, skirts or tailored trousers.
Long Sleeves – With Peplum
Combine the dramatic ruching with long sleeves and a softly gathered peplum for a more expressive silhouette.
Pattern Note: The long-sleeve pattern is drafted slightly longer than standard. The designer recommends checking the sleeve length and adjusting it to your preference.
Design Details
Elasticated Centre-Front Ruching
A narrow elastic is stitched along the centre-front seam allowance to create the signature vertical gathering. The result is a textured, softly sculpted appearance that gives the top its distinctive character.
Ruched Side Seams
Matching elastic pieces are stitched along the side seam allowances to gather the fabric evenly and complement the centre-front ruching.
Shaped Upper Bodice
The curved seam between the upper and lower bodice sections gives SH003 a distinctive look. Accurate pinning and careful stitching help maintain the intended shape.
Optional Gathered Peplum
The peplum variation introduces extra volume below the fitted bodice. Gathering stitches are used to distribute the fabric evenly before the peplum is attached.
Fitted Neckline
A separate neckband finishes the neckline. The band is gently stretched during assembly to provide a neat finish that follows the shape of the neck opening.
Optional Decorative Bows
The pattern includes an optional cord piece that can be used to create decorative ties or bows. These details are purely decorative and are not required to adjust the permanent elastic ruching.

The SH003 is designed for stretch knit fabrics containing elastane. Good stretch and recovery are essential for achieving the intended close-fitting silhouette and allowing the top to be put on comfortably.

Important: A fabric containing elastane is essential for the original pattern. Non-stretch woven fabrics and stable knits without sufficient stretch are not recommended.
Fabric Requirements
The designer's guide specifies approximately 1.00–1.75 m of stretch knit fabric, depending on the selected size, sleeve length and fabric width. The supplied yardage chart includes the optional peplum.
For Fabrics 152 cm - 60" Wide

Important: Consult the detailed size-by-size fabric requirement chart included in the PDF instructions before purchasing your fabric.
Additional Fabric: Allow extra for directional prints, pattern matching, fabric shrinkage, adjustments or narrower usable widths.
Elastic Requirements
The SH003 requires three pieces of narrow elastic to create the gathering along the centre front and side seams.
Elastic Width: Approximately 5 mm - 1/4"

Placement: Centre Front and Both Side Seams
The required length of each elastic piece depends on the selected size and whether the garment is sewn with or without a peplum. Refer to the supplied elastic cutting chart before cutting.
Important: The elastic creates permanent gathering. The optional decorative bows are not functional drawstrings.

No Serger? The designer explains how to substitute a zigzag stitch for overlocked seams using a regular sewing machine, while respecting the original seam allowance.
Size Range & Fit
The SH003 includes eight sizes from XS through 4XL.
The pattern is intentionally close-fitting. The designer recommends selecting your size primarily according to your bust circumference. If you are between sizes, choosing the larger size may provide a more comfortable fit.

Fit Tip: These are body measurements, not finished garment measurements. Select your size primarily according to your bust circumference. The fabric's stretch and recovery can influence the final fit and the appearance of the gathering.
Sewing Construction Overview
Step 1 – Prepare the Pattern and Fabric:
Choose your size, sleeve length and peplum variation. Print the pattern at actual size, check the test square and assemble the pages if using the home-printing file.
Step 2 – Prepare the Neckband and Optional Peplum:
Sew the neckband into a loop and press it. If using the peplum, sew gathering stitches along its upper edges and gently gather the fabric.
Step 3 – Assemble the Front:
Join the front sections along the centre seam, then attach the shaped upper-front piece, carefully aligning the notches and curved seam.
Step 4 – Attach the Front Peplum if Selected:
Align the gathered peplum with the lower front edge and stitch it in place, distributing the gathers evenly.
Step 5 – Assemble the Back:
Join the upper-back and lower-back sections. Attach the back peplum if making the peplum variation.
Step 6 – Join Shoulders and Neckline:
Sew the shoulder seams and attach the neckband, gently stretching it to match the neckline.
Step 7 – Attach Sleeves and Sew Side Seams:
Attach the selected short or long sleeves, then close the remaining side seams according to the illustrated instructions.
Step 8 – Create the Elastic Ruching:
Secure the narrow elastic pieces to the seam allowances at the centre front and both sides. Stitch with a zigzag while distributing the excess fabric evenly to create the gathered effect.
Step 9 – Finish the Hems:
Complete the sleeve and lower hems using the recommended knit-finishing method.
Step 10 – Optional Decorative Details:
Add decorative bows, labels or other suitable embellishments to personalize the finished top.
Seam Allowances & Sewing Notes
- Assembly Seam Allowance: 5 mm - approximately 1/4"
- Hem Allowance: 1.3 cm - approximately 1/2"
- Construction: Overlocker or appropriate zigzag stitch on a regular sewing machine

We strive for excellence in our products and customer service, but some imperfections may occur with fabric.
Please note that stains, holes, or blemishes within 3 inches (10 cm) of the edge are considered acceptable. Missing or pulled knit stitches on the wrong side of the fabric that do not distort the face are also considered acceptable. Additionally, fabric cut at 1 to 3 cm from the edge is acceptable. Stains on the inside of the fabric are also acceptable if they do not appear on the right side.
Please be aware that fabric may shrink after the first wash, so we recommend purchasing slightly more than the exact length required for your project.
We cannot cancel or refund orders once we've cut your fabric. If a refund is necessary, a 5% administration fee of your total bill will be charged.
We cannot offer refunds or compensation for items purchased a few days before they go on sale.
If a product is sold out, we'll contact you immediately to offer either a refund of the item at the price you've paid or a replacement with a product of equal value.
