A distinctive yarn-dyed cotton-linen fabric featuring a dark tartan plaid and beautifully irregular crinkled surface. Woven in deep forest green, black, grey and subtle blue tones, the plaid is created directly through the woven construction using different coloured yarns rather than being printed onto the fabric.
Made from 70% cotton and 30% linen, this fabric combines the softness and versatility of cotton with the natural texture, breathability and character of linen. At 197 gsm / 5.81 oz/yd², it falls within a light-to-medium weight range, offering enough body to highlight its textured surface while remaining comfortable and versatile for apparel.
The yarn-dyed tartan construction gives the plaid greater depth and a more textile-rich appearance than a surface print. Because the coloured yarns form part of the weave itself, the pattern feels naturally integrated into the fabric and works beautifully with its irregular crinkled texture.
The surface has a pronounced puckered and crinkled finish, creating soft ripples and variations throughout the fabric. These irregularities give the plaid additional dimension and prevent the surface from appearing completely flat or uniform. As the fabric moves and drapes, the checks subtly shift with the texture, giving garments a relaxed and naturally textured appearance.
The combination of a traditional dark tartan plaid with a contemporary crinkled finish makes this fabric particularly suited to understated silhouettes where the textile itself becomes the focus. It works beautifully for relaxed shirts, dresses, skirts, trousers and lightweight layering pieces.
As a designer deadstock fabric, quantities are limited. Once our current stock is sold out, we may not be able to source this fabric again.
Recommended Uses
- Button-up shirts
- Oversized shirts and overshirts
- Shirt dresses
- Relaxed dresses
- Blouses and tops
- Loose-fitting trousers
- Relaxed shorts
- Skirts
- Lightweight unstructured jackets
- Layering pieces
- Scarves and accessories
This fabric is especially well suited to relaxed and slightly oversized silhouettes. Simpler sewing patterns allow the yarn-dyed plaid and crinkled texture to remain the focus of the finished garment.
Working With Crinkle Cotton Linen
Because the crinkled surface contributes to both the appearance and dimensions of the fabric, we strongly recommend pre-washing before cutting.
Avoid pressing the entire fabric completely flat before cutting, as excessive heat and pressure may temporarily reduce some of the natural puckered texture.
Because this is a yarn-dyed plaid, additional fabric may be required if you would like to carefully match the tartan across prominent seams, pockets or garment fronts.
Care Instructions
- Pre-wash before cutting and sewing
- Machine wash cold or warm on a gentle cycle
- Wash with similar colours
- Use a mild detergent
- Hang to dry or tumble dry low
- Use a low to medium iron only when necessary
- Avoid aggressively pressing the crinkled texture flat
- Natural linen fibres may soften further with washing and wear
FAQ
What does yarn-dyed mean?
Yarn-dyed fabric is woven using yarns that have been dyed before weaving. In this fabric, the different coloured yarns are woven together to create the tartan plaid rather than having the design printed onto the finished fabric.
Is this fabric seersucker?
We describe this fabric as a crinkle cotton-linen woven rather than traditional seersucker. It has a distinctive puckered and crinkled surface, but without manufacturer confirmation of a traditional seersucker construction, crinkle cotton linen is the more accurate description.
Is this fabric lightweight?
At 197 gsm, this fabric falls within the light-to-medium weight range. It has more body than a lightweight shirting while remaining suitable for shirts, dresses, skirts, relaxed trousers and other apparel projects.
Does this cotton-linen fabric stretch?
No. This is a woven cotton-linen fabric with no added stretch. Choose sewing patterns designed for non-stretch woven fabrics.
Should I iron out the crinkles before cutting?
No. The crinkled surface is part of the character of this fabric. Pre-wash before cutting and avoid aggressively pressing it completely flat. If pressing is required during construction, use only as much heat and pressure as necessary.
Do I need extra fabric to match the plaid?
If you would like the tartan to align across prominent seams, pockets or garment fronts, purchasing additional fabric is recommended. The amount required will depend on your sewing pattern and how precisely you would like to match the plaid.
What does designer deadstock mean?
Deadstock refers to surplus fabric from the fashion and textile industry that is available in limited quantities. Because deadstock fabrics generally cannot be reordered once sold out, availability is limited to our current stock.
Due to the different colour variations of each monitor and mobile device, we cannot guarantee the colour will exactly match what you see online.
