The Zweigart Stramin 500/44 Waste Canvas is a versatile 11-count embroidery canvas that allows you to add counted cross stitch and decorative embroidery to fabrics that do not naturally have an even, countable weave.
Made in Germany by Zweigart from 100% cotton, this white canvas features an open double-thread construction with 4.4 stitches per 1 cm, equivalent to approximately 11 count. Its stiff finish keeps the grid stable and easy to work with while embroidering.
Use it temporarily as waste canvas for adding cross stitch to clothing, bags, accessories and other woven fabrics, or leave the canvas permanently in your project and completely cover it with embroidery for needlepoint, Gobelin and other decorative needlework techniques.
What Is Waste Canvas?
Waste canvas is a removable embroidery canvas that provides a temporary, evenly spaced grid over a fabric that cannot otherwise be easily counted for cross stitch.
The waste canvas is positioned over your base fabric and your embroidery is stitched through both layers. Once the design is complete, the individual canvas threads can then be carefully pulled out, leaving your embroidery directly on the original fabric.
This makes it possible to add counted cross-stitch designs to many fabrics and finished items that would otherwise be difficult to embroider using a counted pattern.
11 Count / 44 Stitches per 10 cm
Zweigart Article 500/44 has 4.4 stitches per cm, equivalent to approximately 11 count. The more open grid produces larger stitches than a finer waste canvas such as a 14-count version.
This makes 11 count particularly useful when you want a design with larger, more visible stitches or when working with thicker embroidery threads.
Double-Thread Construction
Zweigart Stramin 500 is constructed as a double-thread canvas. Pairs of adjacent mesh threads form the structure around each stitch, creating the characteristic open grid of this embroidery canvas.
The canvas is heavily finished to provide rigidity and stability while stitching. Its open construction makes the individual openings easy to identify and provides a consistent guide for counted embroidery.
How to Use as Waste Canvas
- Cut a piece of waste canvas slightly larger than your embroidery design.
- Position it over the area of your fabric where you would like the finished embroidery.
- Secure the canvas carefully so that the grid remains straight and does not shift while stitching.
- Work your embroidery through both the waste canvas and the fabric underneath.
- Once the embroidery is complete, carefully pull out the individual canvas threads, leaving your embroidery on the original fabric.
Tip: You can damper the waste canvas to make the pulling of the threads easier.

Thread & Needle Recommendations
For cross stitch, Zweigart lists options including approximately 2 strands of embroidery floss, depending on the desired coverage and thread being used. For Gobelin or needlepoint, 4 or 6 strand of embroidery floss can be used.
Thread recommendations are general guidelines. The ideal combination will depend on your base fabric, embroidery design, thread and desired coverage.
