The Zweigart Stramin 510/56 Waste Canvas makes it possible to add counted cross stitch and other embroidery designs to fabrics that do not naturally have an even, countable weave. Place the canvas over your base fabric, stitch your design using the regular grid, then dampen the canvas and carefully remove its threads when your embroidery is complete.

Made in Germany by Zweigart from 100% cotton, this 14-count waste canvas features a highly open double-thread construction with a stiff finish that provides stability while you work. The finished embroidery remains on your garment or fabric after the waste canvas threads have been removed.

This makes waste canvas particularly useful when you want to add cross stitch to materials that cannot normally be counted for embroidery, including clothing, bags, accessories and other woven fabrics.

14 Count Waste Canvas

This Zweigart canvas has a 14-count construction, equivalent to approximately 5.6 stitches per centimetre.

The white canvas is woven with blue guide lines positioned at intervals of five stitches. These lines act as a counting aid, making it easier to position your embroidery motif, keep track of your stitches and accurately align the canvas on your base fabric.

What Is Waste Canvas?

Waste canvas is a removable embroidery canvas designed to temporarily provide an even, countable grid over another fabric. It allows you to cross stitch a counted design onto materials that do not have a naturally countable weave.

The individual threads of Zweigart 510 Waste Canvas are treated with a special finish that dissolves in water. Dampening the canvas allows the threads to separate more easily so they can be carefully pulled out after the embroidery is complete, leaving only your finished embroidery on the original fabric.

How to Use Waste Canvas

  1. Cut a piece of waste canvas approximately 8–10 cm / 3"–4" larger than your embroidery design.
  2. Position the canvas over the area of your fabric where you would like to embroider.
  3. Baste or secure the canvas so it remains straight and stable while stitching.
  4. Work your cross stitch or embroidery through both the waste canvas and the fabric underneath.
  5. Once your embroidery is complete, dampen the canvas with water.
  6. Carefully pull out the warp and weft threads one at a time, leaving the embroidery on your fabric.

Tip: Dampening the waste canvas helps dissolve the special finish holding the canvas threads together, making the individual threads easier to remove.

Blue Counting Guides

One of the most useful features of Zweigart Stramin 510/56 is its integrated blue counting grid. Blue threads are woven into the canvas at five-stitch intervals to make counting and positioning your embroidery easier.

The blue guides also help with precise cutting and make it easier to position the canvas straight and at the correct angle on your base fabric.

Recommended Uses

  • Adding cross stitch to clothing
  • Embroidering denim and woven garments
  • Cross stitch on tote bags and fabric bags
  • Personalizing fabric accessories
  • Decorative embroidery
  • Counted cross stitch
  • Needlepoint
  • Gobelin embroidery
  • Pictures, cushions and decorative textile projects
  • Projects requiring a temporary countable embroidery grid

Thread & Needle Recommendations

For cross stitch, Zweigart recommends approximately 2 strands of embroidery floss with a No. 20 needle.

For Gobelin stitch / half cross stitch, Zweigart recommends approximately 6 strands of embroidery floss with a No. 20 needle.

Thread recommendations are general guidelines. The ideal combination may vary depending on your embroidery design, base fabric, thread colour and desired coverage. Testing your thread on a small sample before beginning your project is recommended.

Zweigart Quality – Made in Germany

Produced by Zweigart in Germany, Stramin 510/56 is designed specifically for embroidery and needlework. Its precise double-thread grid, integrated blue counting guides and removable construction make it a versatile tool for adding counted embroidery to fabrics that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to cross stitch directly.

The canvas can also be completely covered with embroidery for traditional needlepoint and Gobelin projects such as pictures, cushions and other decorative pieces.

PLEASE NOTE

We strive for excellence in our products and customer service, but some imperfections may occur with fabric.

Please note that stains, holes, or blemishes within 3 inches (10 cm) of the edge are considered acceptable. Missing or pulled knit stitches on the wrong side of the fabric that do not distort the face are also considered acceptable. Additionally, fabric cut at 1 to 3 cm from the edge is acceptable. Stains on the inside of the fabric are also acceptable if they do not appear on the right side.

Please be aware that fabric may shrink after the first wash, so we recommend purchasing slightly more than the exact length required for your project.

We cannot cancel or refund orders once we've cut your fabric. If a refund is necessary, a 5% administration fee of your total bill will be charged.

We cannot offer refunds or compensation for items purchased a few days before they go on sale.

Please note that monitor or device settings may affect how you view product colours on our website. We cannot issue a refund if there are discrepancies between the product image and the actual colour.
