Discover relaxed elegance with The Lola Blouse by Juliana Martejevs, a contemporary oversized shirt dress PDF sewing pattern featuring a classic button-front closure, traditional shirt collar, long sleeves and a comfortable midi-length silhouette.
Inspired by the timeless button-down shirt, Lola transforms this wardrobe essential into a generously cut, midi-length blouse dress that combines everyday comfort with effortless style. Its loose, straight silhouette makes it ideal for wearing on its own as a relaxed dress or styled open as a lightweight layering piece.
The design features a structured collar and collar stand, a full-length front button placket, relaxed long sleeves without cuffs, a centre-back box pleat and large patch pockets. These familiar shirtmaking details give Lola a polished appearance while preserving its casual, modern character.
The midi length creates a beautiful balance between comfort and versatility. Wear Lola with sneakers or sandals for a relaxed everyday look, pair it with boots for transitional weather, or add a belt to create a more defined silhouette.
Designed for lightweight to medium-weight woven fabrics with little or no stretch, The Lola Blouse is particularly beautiful in cotton poplin, cotton shirting and soft woven fabrics with enough drape to complement its oversized shape.
The designer's original sample was sewn in a lightweight seersucker fabric composed of 56% polyester and 44% viscose, weighing approximately 117 gsm. The pattern can also be sewn in cotton poplin for a classic shirt-dress appearance.

Design Details
Oversized Midi-Length Silhouette:
The Lola Blouse features a wide, straight-cut body that falls to approximately midi length. Its generous ease creates a relaxed, comfortable fit while maintaining the appearance of a classic button-down shirt.
Classic Shirt Collar:
A traditional collar and separate collar stand frame the neckline, adding structure and a polished finish to the oversized silhouette.
Full-Length Button Placket:
The centre-front opening extends along the dress, creating a versatile garment that can be worn fully buttoned or styled open over another outfit.
Long Sleeves Without Cuffs:
The relaxed long sleeves have a simple finish without traditional buttoned cuffs. Their uncomplicated construction complements the modern, minimalist design.
Back Box Pleat:
A box pleat at the centre back adds subtle volume, allowing the shirt dress to fall comfortably away from the body while creating an attractive detail beneath the yoke.
Separate Back Yoke:
The double-layered back yoke provides a classic shirtmaking detail and creates a clean finish at the shoulders.
Large Patch Pockets:
The pattern includes large patch pocket pieces that add a casual, utility-inspired touch. Their simple shape makes them a versatile detail for both solid and printed fabrics.
Comfortable Midi Length:
The longer cut makes Lola particularly versatile. Wear it as a dress, pair it with trousers for a layered look, or leave it open as a relaxed outer layer.
Styling Ideas
- Classic Shirt Dress: Sew Lola in crisp white or pale blue cotton poplin for a timeless, understated look.
- Modern Seersucker: Choose a lightweight seersucker fabric to create a softly textured, relaxed dress similar to the designer's original.
- Everyday Casual: Pair your finished Lola Blouse with sneakers, a crossbody bag and simple jewellery.
- Relaxed Office Style: Select a neutral cotton shirting fabric and wear the dress with loafers or ankle boots.
- Layered Outfit: Wear the shirt dress open over a fitted top and trousers for a modern layered silhouette.
- Belted Look: Add a separate belt to define the waist and create a different shape.
- Statement Prints: Experiment with stripes, checks or other woven prints to emphasize the oversized silhouette.
Recommended Fabrics
Juliana Martejevs recommends lightweight to medium-weight woven fabrics with little or no elastane. The ideal fabric should have enough stability for the collar, placket and pockets while allowing the oversized silhouette to fall naturally.
-
Cotton Poplin Fabrics
- Lightweight Seersucker
- Cotton Shirting
- Lightweight Linen
- Cotton-Viscose Woven Fabrics
Designer's Original Fabric: Lightweight seersucker composed of 56% polyester and 44% viscose, approximately 117 gsm.
Fabric Selection Tip: For a lightweight, fluid shirt dress similar to the original sample, choose a softly draping woven fabric. For a slightly crisper and more structured result, cotton poplin is an excellent alternative.
Pattern Matching Tip: Solid fabrics are particularly suitable for beginners. If using stripes, checks or directional prints, pay attention to pattern placement across the front panels, pockets and back yoke.
Important: This pattern is designed for woven fabrics with little or no stretch. Stretch jersey and other highly elastic knit fabrics are not recommended for following the original construction.
Fabric Requirements
Juliana Martejevs specifies the following fabric quantity for a fabric width of at least 138 cm - approximately 54 3/8" wide.
Important: The designer specifies 3.10 m for all seven sizes, from XS to XXXL. This quantity includes the fabric required for the main dress, sleeves, pockets, collar and collar stand.
Note: Additional fabric may be required for directional prints, stripes, checks, pattern matching, shrinkage, fabric nap, length adjustments or narrower usable widths.
Buttons & Fastenings
The Lola Blouse requires 8 buttons or 8 suitable snap fasteners for the front closure.
Fastening Options: Choose traditional buttons and machine-sewn buttonholes for a classic shirt dress, or use suitable snap fasteners for a modern alternative.
Note: The designer does not specify a fixed button diameter in the supplied materials list. Choose buttons that suit the fabric weight and front placket.
Additional Supplies & Notions
- Buttons or Snap Fasteners: 8 pieces
- Matching all-purpose sewing thread
- Sewing machine with a suitable universal needle for the chosen fabric
- Appropriate installation tools if using snaps that require them
-
Fabric scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins or sewing clips
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Fabric marking pen or tailor's chalk
- Iron and ironing board
- Optional serger for finishing selected raw edges
- Buttonhole presser foot if using traditional buttons
- Paper scissors for the PDF pattern
Sewing Tip: A regular sewing machine is sufficient for this project. The designer demonstrates finishing selected fabric edges with zigzag stitching and constructing the side and sleeve seams using French seams.
Size Range & Fit
The Lola Blouse includes seven women's sizes from XS to XXXL. It is designed with a loose, straight-cut silhouette and generous wearing ease.
The designer recommends paying particular attention to your bust measurement when choosing your size. Because Lola is intentionally oversized, it offers a more relaxed fit than a traditional fitted shirt dress.
Pattern Construction Overview
Step 1 – Prepare the Button Placket:
Fold and press the centre-front edges according to the pattern instructions. Stitch the folded sections to create the button plackets.
Step 2 – Sew the Buttonholes:
Mark the buttonhole positions on the front placket. Use a suitable buttonhole setting and presser foot for the selected buttons.
Step 3 – Prepare the Patch Pockets:
Fold and press the upper pocket edges, then finish the remaining edges. Position the pockets using the pattern markings and topstitch them securely in place.
Step 4 – Create the Back Box Pleat:
Fold the marked sections at the centre back to form the pleat. Pin and stitch the pleat according to the illustrated instructions.
Step 5 – Construct the Back Yoke:
Attach the yoke pieces to the back panel, then enclose the shoulder seams between the yoke layers for a clean interior finish.
Step 6 – Attach the Sleeves:
Position the long sleeves at the armholes, matching the notches. Stitch and press the sleeve seams.
Step 7 – Finish the Side and Sleeve Seams:
Follow the designer's French-seam method for enclosing the side and sleeve seams, creating a neat and durable interior finish.
Step 8 – Construct the Shirt Collar:
Sew the collar pieces together, trim the corners and press. Assemble the collar stand and attach the finished collar to the neckline.
Step 9 – Finish the Hems:
Fold, press and stitch the sleeve hems and lower dress hem according to the instructions.
Step 10 – Attach the Buttons:
Sew the buttons in their marked positions and carefully open the finished buttonholes.
